Sonja Meyer – ready to serve the community

The newly elected Ward 85 councillor was sworn in on 29 May.

“I am not a politician, I am a service provider and I am willing to serve my people,” said the newly elected councillor for ward 85, Sonja Meyer.

She was officially sworn in on 29 May following the by-election on 23 May. The ward became vacant when the previous councillor, Carl Mann resigned. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained the ward by securing 75 per cent of the votes.

After being sworn in as a City of Johannesburg (CoJ) councillor by the Speaker of Council, councillor Vasco da Gama, she said, “It is an honour and a privilege to join the DA-led administration which prides itself on service delivery and fighting corruption”.

She has been a Kloofendal resident for the past 17 years. “I know my community very well and I am ready to assist residents to address their concerns through an administration that will listen,” she said.

She added that, as a councillor, she wanted to be the link between the community and CoJ. “I have a passion for my community and I want to be there for all residents,” she said.

Sonja’s priorities, as newly elected councillor, include ongoing communication with all residents in the ward by keeping them informed of all issues and solutions regarding the ward, representing all residents in council, ensuring everyone receives only the best service and working with the police and all other stakeholders to ensure the ward’s open green spaces, including the Kloofendal Nature Reserve are protected.

She is a multi-talented woman who has obtained her insurance qualification (IISA) through Unisa, is an associate of the Insurance Institute of South Africa and is an Insurance Risk Manager (Engineering and Construction) at ELB Engineering Services.

Sonja enjoys art, reading and scuba-diving in her spare time. She is also a huge animal lover and spends a lot of her time to help abused, lost and neglected animals.

Sonja’s ward includes Florida Park Ext, Kloofendal, Honey Hills, Ontdekkers Park, Discovery (north of Philips Avenue), Horison Ext 1, Horison Park, Helderkruin, Strubens Valley, Princess Plot 61 and Horizon View.

“I am passionate about my community and I am ready to serve them with pride, “Sonja concluded.
