Support Fred and Martie’s Winter Gift of Life

Donations needed to support project

Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen has, for the past 40 years, ensured that a large number of needy people receive a hot meal on a daily basis.

But, with winter fast approaching, they need the community’s help to ensure that nobody has to make the choice between heating or eating.

“Winter is a beautiful season but a dreadful one for all destitute families, children and elderly folk in our needy community – it often is the longest three months of their lives.

There is a general lack of awareness of the serious effects that cold weather can have on an older person’s health, and we seldom hear about the number of deaths during this time,” said Yolindie Oberholzer, the manager of the soup kitchen.

She added that they will be launching a Winter Gift of Life project, where they will, in addition to a blanket, also supply the people with a parcel containing some winter essentials.

“The parcel, which will cost approximately R750, will contain One day Flu Remedy, Strepsils, Med-Lemon, Borstol cough syrup, Vicks VapoRub, Scott’s Emulsion, tissues, gloves, a scarf, socks, a winter cap and a jersey,” Yolindie said.

In order for them to drive this project successfully, they are asking the community to help, by either donating warm clothes, blankets, or any item on the list, or by making a financial donation.

“With your love and support towards this worthy cause, you will make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate children and elderly folk. They will be reminded that the tender loving care of human beings will never become obsolete,” she said.

In addition to the items they need for the parcels, their winter wishlist includes the following:

• Soup powder

• Vegetable soup mix

• Fresh vegetables

• Canned soup

• Fresh fruit, especially oranges

• Blankets (adult and baby)

• Medicines (as listed above)

• Any non-perishable food

• Winter clothes (new or second-hand)

• Socks

• Shoes

• Tracksuits

• Tissues

• Demazin

• Allergex

• Scarves

• Hats

• Gloves

• Soup meat (mince or any other suitable meat)

Yolindie added that they are a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), and said, “Should you want to give us a financial donation, we will issue you with an IT18A certificate, which can be used for tax purposes.”
