Today in History: Monty Python was formed –seven of their best scenes

British comedy group Monty Python was formed on this day in 1969 and would go on to become one of the most well-known comedy groups of all time.

For 49 years, British comedy group Monty Python has been leaving the world in stitches with its often outlandishly absurd humour.

The group, made up of John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam, got together on 11 May 1969 and would become one of the greatest comedy groups of all time.

The group’s first major breakthrough was its sketch comedy series, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which had 45 episodes that aired over a period of four seasons and ran from 1969 to 1974.

The group released its first feature-length film, And Now for Something Completely Different, in 1971. This was followed by four more feature-length pieces.

Arguably the group’s two most successful films were Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) and Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979) which were both shot on very low budgets and funded by external sources.

Since disbanding in 1989, the group has done several reunion shows and a number of live performances based on their television show and movies.

In honour of the group’s hilariously brilliant career, here are seven of the best sketches/ scenes (in no particular order):

1. The Knights Who Say Ni – Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

2. Camelot scene – Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

3. The Stoning – Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)

4. The Black Knight – Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

5. Pontius Pilate – Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)

6. Upper Class Twit of the Year – And Now for Something Completely Different (1971)

7. French Taunting – Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
