Train fire breaks out near Maraisburg station

A fire broke out on a train in Maraisburg earlier this evening at about 6pm.

The train was travelling toward Maraisburg train station when it caught fire.

It came to a halt at about 6pm on the tracks above the N1 North highway with the fire making its way through the train.

Emergency medical services were swift to react and began fighting the blaze shortly after 6pm.

Owing to the swift reaction time of the emergency services, the fire was brought under control not long after their arrival.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) along with Johannesburg Fire Department members were on the scene for the incident.

Once the fire was put out and the train had been moved, PRASA individuals stayed behind to begin their investigations.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
