Butchery shooting: A sigh of relief as woman fights bravely

Her condition remains stable

Although 38-year-old Riette van der Merwe is still in an induced coma, her family said she is fighting bravely.

Van der Merwe was shot twice in the head at point blank range during an armed robbery at Manny’s Meat Market in Newlands last Monday, 23 April.

Van der Merwe’s sister, Susan Button, said Van der Merwe expressed the most “hopeful, beautiful sign” last night (2 May) when a male friend visited her for the first time. “When he gently touched her, she gave a sigh that sounded like a sigh of relief. We all were elated. She also sheds tears when we say goodbye after visiting,” said an excited Button. “Her fever has gone down from 38,6° to 38° and her intracranial pressure remains between 18mmHg and 20mmHg,” said Button.

The doctors are still waiting for Van der Merwe’s condition to remain stable for at least three consecutive days before proceeding with treatment and surgery.
