Fed-up community takes matters into its own hands

Residents believe it to be the only solution to the problem.

Witpoortjie was roaring with fed-up, armed residents who took to the streets yesterday (1 May). This time their weapons were not firearms, but lawnmowers, weed cutters, electric saws and the likes.

This came after Natalie Swart, well known for having started up various crime-fighting WhatsApp groups, had seen residents’ frustration with the lack of service delivery in the area. She started a WhatsApp group to specifically tackle these issues. Instead of spending Workers Day relaxing, members of the group could be seen all over Witpoortjie mowing pavements, cutting unsightly weeds, trimming branches that obscured traffic signs and collecting rubbish.

The general sentiment of the group, named Community Cleanup, was that this was the only solution to the problem of lack of service delivery – to stop complaining and do it yourself.

Swart encouraged residents in areas other than Lindhaven, Witpoortjie and Grobler Park, to copy her formula and start their own groups. She offered her advice to anyone who wants to start such a group. For advice or to be added to the Community Cleanup group, call Swart on 081 823 8587 or join Swart’s WhatsApp group here.
