Residents are urged to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle when disposing of waste, or to contact their nearest Pikitup depot for bulk waste.
The waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, Pikitup, wants to stop public littering and illegal dumping. To this end, the organisation introduced a free bulky waste removal service in 2016 and encourages residents to use it to reduce and ultimately eradicate illegal dumping.
The free bulky service must be used for large waste items such as old mattresses, old furniture, fridges and large electronic waste materials such as washing machines, dishwashers and freezers.
Residents can use the nearest garden site to dispose of bulky waste if they have their own transport, or log a call at any Pikitup depot for collection of the item(s). The responsible Depot Manager will book a call and arrange for a free, once a month, bulky waste service to collect the bulk waste. Pikitup will then collect and dispose of the waste material in an appropriate manner.
The aim of this initiative is to divert recyclables away from the landfill sites, resulting in increased landfill space and extending the lifespan of existing landfills.
Pikitup is trying to divert 97 per cent of waste away from landfill sites through such initiatives. This is in line with its strategic objective of encouraging residents to recycle more and to dispose of waste in a responsible manner.
