Residents reminded to vote in the Ward 85 by-election

The by-election will take place on 23 May

Residents of Ward 85 are reminded to vote in the upcoming by-election, when a new councillor for their ward will be chosen.

“The by-election will be held because of the resignation of Ward 85 councillor, Carl Mann at the end of February,” said Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand.

The ward consists of the following suburbs: Florida Park Ext, Kloofendal, Honey Hills, Ontdekkers Park, Discovery (north of Phillips Avenue), Horison Ext 1, Horison Park, Helderkruin, Strubens Valley, Princess Plot 61 and Horizon View.

“It is expected that three political parties will contest the by-election, i.e., the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA),” councillor Niemand said.

He added that the parties have until 30 April to submit their nominations to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). “The DA candidate has already been nominated. It’s Sonja Meyer,” the councillor said.

The by-election will take place on 23 May from 7am to 7pm and special votes at voting stations, as well as home visits, will be conducted on 22 May fom 8am to 5pm.

Voting stations that will be open on Election Day are:

• Die Gereformeerde Kerk in Phillips Avenue, Dicovery

• Laerskool Horison, Weaver Street, Horison

• Biokinetic Centre, Phisant Street, Helderkruin

• Lebogang Crèche, Plot 61, Princess

• Kloofendal Ecological Centre, Galena Avenue, Kloofendal

• Strubens Valley Library, Fredenharry Street, Strubens Valley
