Emergency drill conducted at Westgate

Procedure plans reviewed.

A emergency evacuation drill was held at Westgate Super Regional Shopping Centre.

According to Gail Mashiane, marketing manager, it was part of the centre’s “continuous efforts to guarantee a safe shopping environment for tenants and shoppers and to ensure that our objectives are in line with the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act”.

During the process, fire attentiveness, building fire safety plans, general evacuation procedure plans and and emergency procedures were all reviewed and evaluated by the authorities. The drill included the West Rand Disaster Management Department, Roodepoort Fire Department and Roodepoort Police.

The drill lasted 15 minutes and included several real-life scenarios.
