Suspects crash vehicle after smash and grab

Victim gave chase after the incident.

At approximately 1.15pm on Saturday (14 April) BCI Security received a report from a Help24 tow-truck driver of an accident on the N1 freeway between 14th Avenue and Gordon Road on the southbound carriageway.

A motorist, whose cellphone had been stolen in a smash-and-grab attack on 14th Avenue, chased after the suspects. When the suspects attempted to push the motorist off the road just before the Gordon Road off-ramp, they lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the victim’s vehicle, ending up on the embankment.

Both injured suspects ran from the scene across a veld into the residential area of Quellerina. A massive manhunt followed while security companies and local patrollers covered all exit points. The BCI Operations and K9 team joined in the search for the suspects but after more than two hours a heavy thunderstorm caused the search to be called off.

Just after 6pm a message came through from the JHB West Responders group that one of the suspects had been found and detained by two local residents. He had been hiding in a veld but when he thought it was safe to come out after it turned dark, his escape was thwarted by barking dogs on a nearby property. When the owner investigated he noticed the man with injuries to his head and face, and called for assistance.

After confirming the description of the suspect with the victim and checking the head injuries the suspect had sustained from hitting the getaway car’s windscreen, he was arrested by Florida Police and taken to the station for questioning and processing.
