GDE Grade 1 and 8 registrations open today – what you need to know
The 2019 applications for Grade 1 and 8 learners have been opened online by the Gauteng Department of Education, and here's what you need to know.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has announced the opening of the online applications for parents who seek admission for their children in Grades 1 and 8 in 2019.
The system, which is relatively new, is reportedly capable of handling large application numbers. It experienced 90 994 applications when it was first implemented in 2017.
It is important to note that a current enrollment in Grade R does not guarantee admission to Grade 1 at the same school for 2019. A normal application must be submitted.
There are several things that parents wanting to register their children for Grades 1 and 8 for the 2019 school year need to be aware of, as follows:
Three-step application
The process is short and sweet, involving only three steps.
Step 1: Enter parent/ legal guardian details
Step 2: Enter learner details
Step 3: Apply to a school
Parents must be aware that they will need to complete all three steps for a successful application, and that they can only make application to a maximum of five schools.
Required documents
Required documents for South African citizens:
• Parent/ legal guardian’s ID
• Proof of home/ work address
• Child’s birth certificate
• Clinic card (Grade 1)
• Latest school academic report card (Grade 8)
Required documents for non-South African citizens:
• Child’s asylum-seeker/ refugee permit
• Parent/ legal guardian’s passport
• Proof of home/ work address
• Latest school academic report card (Grade 8)
N.B.: Required documents must be submitted directly to all schools where applications were made within seven days of application.
Important timelines to note
• 16 April–28 May — Online application period for Grades 1 and 8
• 10 April–11 May — Re-enrolment period for all grades at current schools
• 18 July–28 September — Placement period
