Fun ride and school race added to Glacier Cradle Traverse schedule

The organising committee behind the Glacier Cradle Traverse has decided to add not one, but two, new races to the 2018 event.

The Glacier Cradle Traverse is in its second year this year, and is a three-day mountain bike race that makes its way through the scenic areas of Muldersdrift.

This year’s race will be held from Friday, 6 to Sunday, 8 April at Avianto Lifestyle Estate, and will feature a number of exciting new additions to the event.

Two of the biggest additions this year will be the children’s race and a fun ride.

The children’s race will be for children over the age of eight, and will consist of a 10km ride that will take place during the final stage of the race on the Sunday.

The entry fee for the children’s race will be R100, with all proceeds from the race going towards the series’ Save the Rhino campaign.

The inaugural race’s runner-up, Andrew McLean, feels strongly about the future of the event, believing it could be one to look out for in future. “It’s a world-class event. In a year or two this event is going to be sold out,” he said. “I live in the area, and I was pleasantly surprised with the trails, learning lots of new trails myself.”

Last year’s winner, Dan Fowler, also felt strongly about the race, but he singled out the wildlife as a wonderful attraction.

“We saw a lot of great wildlife. Normally when you’re riding your bike as hard as we do, you don’t get to see the animals, but we saw plenty,” Dan stated.

He also emphasised the fact that the race is not only for professional or aspiring riders, but for social riders too.

“I think the beauty for many social riders is that you don’t have to train for four or five hours a day to compete in a race like this,” he said. “You can train less and actually come and have fun.”
