Jems on high alert for Easter

All fire trucks will be on standby.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (Jems) will be on high alert this Easter weekend.

This is due to an expected increase in the traffic flow to and from the City of Johannesburg, as many holidaymakers will be driving to various holiday destinations and religion-related gatherings.

“During this time, we need to pay special attention to the rules of the road to ensure everybody’s safety,” said Jems spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi.

All 29 fire stations in the city will be fully operational throughout the holiday period.

“Our firefighters and paramedics have not taken leave to be with their families. Instead, they have made this sacrifice to ensure that we are ready to render effective professional emergency services to all the residents of and visitors to the city at all times,” concluded Mulaudzi.

Mulaudzi provided the following tips for road users:

• Check your vehicle and make sure that it is roadworthy.

• Get an adequate amount of quality sleep before setting off on your journey.

• Wear seatbelts at all times while driving, regardless of the distance or speed.

• Don’t drink alcohol and drive.

• If driving long distances, take a break at least every two hours.
