Another bony puppy found in Wilgeheuwel

“We are pleading with the Wilgeheuwel community to please check their neighbours' yards,” said Charmaine from the 9th Day Animal Shelter.

While local residents were still reeling in shock and grief at the sad death of Angel, the emaciated puppy found by BCI Security, another near-identical puppy was found in Wilgeheuwel on 25 March – in a similar condition.

Although it remains pure speculation that the puppies are siblings, the founder of the 9th Day Animal Shelter, Charmaine Booysens, said they went with the idea because they looked so alike. However, the original owner of Angel who has been traced by the SPCA, denied owning the second puppy, stating that he only had one, according to Inspector Mike Allen from the Krugersdorp/ Roodepoort SPCA.

The latest rescue has sparked outrage in the community, with animal organisations going all out to try and find the owner.

“On Sunday another pup was picked up on Oortjie Street, which is also in Wilgeheuwel – a pup almost identical to Angel,” the 9th Day Shelter wrote on its Facebook page, adding that they haven’t managed to find a suitable name for her yet.

The 9th Day has offered a cash reward for any information leading to the identification of the rightful owner of the dog. The organisation, working with BCI Security and the SPCA, is determined to find the place the puppies came from.

“To look the other way and do nothing makes you just as guilty as the person causing this neglect,” said Charmaine, who encouraged reports from the community.

Unlike Angel who succumbed to the dreaded Parvo virus, Charmaine has indicated that the latest rescued dog has no health scares.

Charmaine also speculated that someone had been breeding the puppies and that they had managed to sneak out of the property. She said these puppies are estimated to be about five weeks old, which makes them too young to be vaccinated at the vet.

Inspector Allen said they are working in the area to find owners of pit bulls in order to trace the owner of the latest stray puppy.

An investigation is under way…
