Today in History: Lady Gaga turns 32, remembering 6 of her greatest moments

Throughout her career, Lady Gaga has gifted the world not only with her powerful voice, crazy and powerful lyrics, but also with her beautifully eccentric and outrageous personality.

Whether it’s the powerful ballads she belts out, her crazy personality, or her no-nonsense attitude, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga, has left her mark on the world wherever she’s been and in whatever she does.

In celebration of her 32nd birthday, we decided to take a look back at six of the New York City-born singer’s greatest (and not so great) moments.

1. Her 2011 Grammy ‘hatching’

For her 2011 Grammy Awards performance, Lady Gaga was carried onto the stage by a host of naked dancers in a giant glowing egg (in which she spent three hours ‘getting into character’) before ‘hatching’ live on stage and playing on a dramatic organ with disembodied heads balanced on top.

2. Lady Gaga goes celibate

Lady Gaga famously made a case for celibacy, telling her fans, “It’s not really cool any more to have sex all the time. It’s cooler to be strong and independent.” She was also worried that being sexually active would affect her song-writing, telling Vanity Fair Magazine, “I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they’re going to take my creativity from me through my vagina”.

3. Her 2009 VMAs Award acceptance outfit

Lady Gaga’s outfits have always been a hot topic, and at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards she decided to accept her ‘Best New Artist’ award in a rather interesting outfit. While it was full-bodied (so much so that it covered her face), it didn’t leave much to the imagination as she accepted her award from Eminem.

4. The semen-smelling perfume

The Marry The Night singer designed her signature perfume in 2012, aiming to release fragrance notes of ‘blood and semen’. The promise of this scent did not put off buyers, as Fame was a bestseller in several UK pharmacies.

5. Cited for indecent exposure in Chicago

Police in Chicago once stopped the Poker Face singer to inform her that wearing her tiny hot pants in public constituted ‘indecent exposure’, to which she replied, “It’s fashion! I’m an artist!”

6. The meat dress

In what has become one of the most well-known images of the star, Lady Gaga pitched up at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in a dress made entirely of raw beef. It was named by Time Magazine as the fashion statement of the year, while she explained that the dress was “a statement about one’s need to fight for what one believes in”. It’s now on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
