Contaminated water in Hamberg Dam is killing fish

The park looks like a forest, because it’s no longer being maintained,”

The water in the Hamberg Dam is contaminated and there is a possibility that it is running through to Florida Lake and killing fish, this according to a concerned resident, Marcellus Fynn.

“Hamberg Dam used to be a beautiful park where I could take my son out for fishing, picnics and long walks, but we can no longer engage in such activities because the dam’s water is contaminated and we cannot fish any more.

According to Fynn there is a high possibility that the contaminated water runs through to Florida Lake. This could endanger the fish in that lake as well as the other animals.

The Record made enquires with Joburg Water (JW) spokesperson, Isaac Dhludhlu, Joburg City Parks and Zoo (JPCZ) spokesperson, Jenny Moodley and Ward 84 councillor Gert Niemand about the dire situation.

Dhludhlu and Moodley replied promptly, but we still are awaiting comment from Niemand.

According to Dhludhlu, they have logged a call and sent the matter to Hamberg Depot for their immediate action. “The turnaround times may vary from 24 to 48 hours,” said Dhludhlu.

“The matter of the sewer leakage has been escalated to Joburg Water. The recent rains have contributed to further damage along some of the city’s water bodies. In the interim, JCPZ will investigate and advise regarding the lack of maintenance of the area around the dam,” said Moodley.

Residents are urged to report matters such as burst water pipes, water outages, sewer blockages, dysfunctional meters, fire hydrant leakages or bees found in meter boxes to Joburg Water via customerservice@jwater.co.za, or SMSing 082 653 2143 or 0860 56 28 74.

Joburg City Parks matters, such as fallen trees, and grass cutting in parks, cemeteries or open spaces, must be reported to jcp@jhbcityparks.com or 0860 56 28 74.
