A Honeydew Community Policing Forum Sector 3 meeting held on 14 March cautioned residents about the spike in crime, especially ahead of the Easter holidays and winter season.
Held in their new venue at the Strubensvalley United Church, 885 Florin Road, Wilgeheuwel, the meeting addressed sensitive issues relating to criminal activities and how these scourges can be prevented in the area.
Chairperson for Sector 3, Carolyn Lanzilloti, firstly discussed the persisting crimes. “The Range Rover hijacking gang is still operating in Ruimsig, so if you drive this type of vehicle, please be extra cautious,” she warned.

She advised about domestic workers too. “Please sensitise your domestic workers not to spend idle time outside your premises in general.
Also, remember to tell them not to let anyone in unless they have been informed by you who is coming and can clearly identify them,” she went on.
Lanzilloti added that the numbers of house robberies and -breakings were up, specifically in townhouse complexes. She warned residents not to leave their doors or windows open, even for pets, because the owner becomes an easy target. “As we approach the Easter holidays, we need to be extra vigilant. Also, as we move closer to winter we need to be warned that power cuts might be caused on purpose by criminals or just be more prevalent generally, and we need to secure our premises with other measures that aren’t reliant on electricity,” she stated.
Gary Jordaan from the JHB West Responders team mentioned that crime is up in general outside of their sector and pleaded with residents to be careful when in other sectors or areas.
Lanzilloti also praised the police presence in the month of March. “We have had a greater influx of police vehicles in our sector during March and we hope this continues,” she remarked.
