Decision on South Road closure due in May

The road started collapsing and became unsafe.

Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin has advised the Record of the recent update on the repairs needed on South Road in Lindhaven.

“We are still waiting for the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) to authorise the repairs to South Road.

The report was submitted on 25 January and the decision is anticipated in May – GDARD requires 107 days from the date the report is submitted to make a decision,” said Benjamin.

After the heavy rainfall of October last year, a huge sinkhole developed on South Road, between Hazel Road and Pannevis Street. The road collapsed and was no longer safe for motorists, who were urged to use alternative routes. The road was then barricaded to prevent its use. However, some motorists, among them a number of taxi drivers, removed the barriers in order to drive through, in total disregard of the fact that they were jeopardising their lives, and those of their passengers.

According to them, they cannot wait until the road is repaired, because it’s the route they use on a daily basis, and using alternative routes allegedly causes huge traffic back-ups.
