Community brings criminal to book

Members of the community risked their lives to pursue two suspects who were allegedly involved in an armed robbery in the Florida policing precinct on 22 March.

“It is alleged that at about 9am, the victim was accosted by two men. One pointed at him with a firearm and fired a warning shot, while the other searched him and took his cellphone and wallet containing R150 before running away,” confirmed Florida Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mpho More.

More added that the suspects did not realise the victim worked in the area as later during the day he saw them return to the area and alerted his colleagues. “They managed to catch one suspect, while the other managed to escape,” More explained.

“The police arrested a male aged 27. He will be appearing in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court soon,” More said.

She also mentioned that the victim’s belongings were unfortunately not recovered, but the investigation is still under way.
