#HelpFindLee: MEC shocked by kidnapping incidents

MEC for Community Safety outraged by kidnapping incidents

“I have instructed the Law Enforcement Agencies to investigate both these cases accordingly and ensure that justice is served,” said the Gauteng Member of the Electoral Committee (MEC) for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.

In a press release, the MEC said that she was shocked after two kidnapping incidents shook the communities of Roodekrans and Eldorado Park. The Eldorado Park incident led to the suspects being assaulted by community members.

But, the incident that had the MEC really up in arms, was the alleged abduction of the three-year-old Liyaqat ‘Lee’ Mentoor, who went missing after being dropped off at his grandmother’s house in Roodekrans on 16 March.

“The reports of Liyaqat’s abduction are especially shocking, because of the fact that he was given away by someone who was entrusted with protecting and nurturing him,” the MEC said.

She added that she condemned the alleged kidnapping incidents of children in Gauteng in the strongest possible terms. “And, even though I understand that the community feels frustrated and wants to take the law into its own hands, I strongly advise them not to.

Communities have avenues they can explore to raise their policing concerns instead of resorting to assault and violent protests. These avenues include raising their concerns with their local Community Policing Forum, the Cluster Commander or laying a complaint at my department’s complaints division so that the matter can be investigated and resolved,” she concluded.
