National Common Courtesy Day

Do something nice for someone on #NaionalCommonCourtesyDay

21 March is National Common Courtesy Day and is observed annually. This day was created to remind everyone of the importance of common courtesy in our lives.

Courtesy is described in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a) behaviour marked by polished manners or respect for others (courteous behaviour) or b) a courteous and respectful act or expression.

Common courtesy can be as simple as saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when asking for and receiving a service, gift or assistance. Even if you do not realise it, kindness and courtesy do go a long way and are noticed by others. It is easy to be courteous, let someone in front of you in the traffic, hold the door open for someone, offer to help someone with their groceries or give up your seat on the bus to someone who needs it. Introducing yourself to the new employee or kid at school as well as taking the time to introduce the rest of the crew can go a long way.

These are just a few examples of small things that can make a huge difference to someone else. They can be seen as momentary deeds of being courteous.

To celebrate today, do something nice for someone else. If common courtesy is not part of your daily routine, this is the perfect day to start implementing it into your life. Try it – not only will the other person appreciate it, but you will also feel good.
