Consider naming the Roodepoort SPCA as a beneficiary

Leave a legacy and help them to help the animals

Drawing up a will is not morbid or negative, and it ensures that your wishes are carried out legally to reflect your values and beliefs, such as making provision for animal to be cared for.

“An appeal is made to everyone to consider leaving a gift in your will to benefit the Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA, enabling us to prevent cruelty, protect, rescue and care for animals long into the future,” said Mandy Cattanach, the manager at the SPCA.

With the National Lotteries no longer supporting the SPCA, as well as no financial assistance being received from the government, the SPCA is dependent on the community to help them with donations. “Without a will, all your remaining assets – after debt and administration costs have been subtracted – will be distributed in accordance with the Intestate Succession Act 81 of 1987. This could result in someone receiving a portion of your assets which you may have preferred to donate to the SPCA. That is why it is important to express your wishes in your will, by nominating the Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA as a beneficiary, and include the non-profit registration number (002-020) as well,” Mandy explained.

The SPCA is appealing to attorneys in the area to consider offering their assistance to the community, by giving individuals the opportunity to have their wills drawn up at no cost, during April. “The only thing we ask in return, is that a donation is made to us. The value of the donation will also qualify for tax relief, as a Section 18A certificate will be issued for submission to SARS.”

She added that every legacy helps the SPCA to rescue and give second chances to unwanted, neglected or abused pets. It also enables them to continually monitor facilities where there are animals, including abattoirs, hawking sites, pet shops, breeders, stable yards as well as security companies that use dogs.

“Every legacy is important to us – large and small – as they help build a future where animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve,” she said.

Attorneys who would like to offer their services, or need more information on the proposed initiative, can email the SPCA’s Public Relations Officer, Christine Kuch at pr@rdptspca.co.za.
