National Earmuff Day

Keep your ears warm on #NationalEarmuffDay

13 March is the annual celebration of National Earmuff Day, a day honouring the man who found a better way to keep our ears warm all winter long.

You will be very thankful for this invention if your name was Chester Greenwood who had large protruding ears and lived in a bitterly cold climate. Although Greenwood is honoured for the origin of National Earmuff Day, the creator of National Earmuff Day is unknown.

The 15-year-old Chester came up with an idea to keep his ears warm after spending the whole day at the ice rink. Partnering with his grandmother who sewed tufts of fur between the loops of wire, he soon had a working model.

He was a prolific inventor and although he had quite a few different inventions, he would be remembered for his most popular invention which was the earmuffs. He was awarded with the patent for the earmuffs on 13 March 1877.

Greenwood manufactured theses ear protectors for almost 60 years and provided jobs for the people living in Farmington, Maine.

To celebrate today, wear your favourite earmuffs and use #NationalEarmuffDay to post on social media.
