The Integrity Award goes to two JMPD officers

The suspects have been charged with bribery and possession of stolen goods.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) congratulated Officers Khotso Manamela and Shimane Mabuse, who received the MMC’s Integrity Award at the inaugural Community Safety Awards. The awards were hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Community Safety, according to an announcement made by the City of Johannesburg.

It was indicated that officers conducted a raid that resulted in the recovery of stolen city-owned copper cables in September 2017, which cost City Power R15 million to replace.

The pair were following up on a lead that directed them to a scrap dealer in Robertville, Johannesburg, which resulted in the discovery of stolen City infrastructure. The stolen copper cables were the main reason for the inner city’s 24-hour blackouts, inconveniencing thousands of residents and workers and placing their lives in danger.

They also stated that the suspects attempted to bribe their way of out of the arrest with a bribe of R10 000 in cash. The officers rejected the money with the contempt it deserved and proceeded to arrest and handcuff the suspects. They also added another charge of bribery and corruption against the suspects.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, expressed his gratitude to the officers, saying that they had set a good example, and hoping that other officers would follow in the footsteps of Officers Manamela and Mabuse.
