[JUST IN] Police say missing firearms were found shortly after rollover accident on N14

"Before we even dispatched the K9 unit, the firearms had been found in the possession of the injured security officers."

The Muldersdrift Police have denied claims that two firearms went missing from an accident scene on the N14 this morning, 5 March.

Warrant Officers Smit and Van der Merwe, who were assigned to the case, said the firearms were found soon after they went looking for them.

“Before we even dispatched the K9 unit, the firearms had been found in the possession of the injured security officers,” said Smit.

“The public has nothing to fear as the firearms are in safe hands.”

Thirteen people were injured after the light duty vehicle they were travelling in rolled early this morning. Three of them were in a critical condition when paramedics attended to them on scene.

The vehicle belongs to Inkwe Security Services (ISS) and had armed security guards in the goods compartment.

Although it is illegal to transport passengers in the goods compartment of any vehicle, the police have not yet opened a case against the company, nor have they fined them.

“It was too crazy on scene to open cases and issue fines, but it’s a matter that will be attended to shortly,” said Smit.

The investigation will continue.
