House robbery and car hijacking safety tips

Important not to panic.

With house robberies and hijackings once again escalating, the Roodepoort Police have asked the public to take note of the following safety tips regarding these two types of crime.

Car hijackings:

1. Don’t panic, co-operate and give them what they request.

2. Don’t reach for your safety belt or handbag, they might think you intend to harm them.

3. Keep in mind they are also nervous and won’t hesitate to defend themselves.

4. Avoid a struggle with the hijackers.

5. Don’t stop to help anyone you don’t know.

6. Don’t give strangers a lift.

7. Beware of hijackers using children to get you to stop.

8. Make sure your doors are locked.

9. Always look in your mirrors to see if you are being followed. If you are, drive past your house to somewhere safe.

House robberies:

1. Make sure all gates and doors are locked.

2. Don’t open for people pretending to be selling something.

3. Be vigilant of cars parked near your house that you don’t know.

4. Tell your kids and domestic workers not to open for any strangers.

5. Also beware of people who pretend they are employees of the municipality.
