Tenors needed to bolster the Mozart Choir

Tenors needed to add balance

“It will be our privilege and pleasure to perform this opera at the Roodepoort Theatre, as a full opera has not been hosted there in many years.

“The Johannesburg WA Mozart Choir will be performing The Mikado, an opera by Gilbert and Sullivan at the theatre from 6 to 8 July. The choir will be accompanied by our multi-talented musical director, C-J de Graaff and accompanist, Daniela Pretorius,” said Karin Spottiswoode, Mozart Choir Committee member.

She added that the drama, humour, political and social commentary in The Mikado will be adapted to 2018 South Africa, while keeping the original music and vocal script. “In its two-and-a-half years of existence, the choir has performed the The Magic Whistle and To Life in the Roodepoort Basement Theatre. Last year ended with a classic programme in the Sanlam Auditorium at the University of Johannesburg, with the Colla Voce (South Gauteng Youth Choir),” Karin said.

The choir has about 55 members, but they are appealing to tenors to join them to add balance to the vocals. “This year will continue with a classical concert at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg and a Musical Christmas Tale at the Theatre on the Square, Sandton in November,” Karin said.

Rehearsals for The Mikado are held on Monday evenings from 7pm to 9.30pm at the Christ Church, corner of Cutten and Raath Streets in Horison. “Secure parking is also available,” she said.

Tenors who are keen to join the choir, can contact C-J de Graaff on 083 292 5270 or Karin Spottiswoode on 072 595 6991.
