Three suspects killed in shootout

According to Honeydew Police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan, the shootout incident occurred after the suspects were chased by police following a business robbery in the Randburg area

 

Three suspects were confirmed dead by Honeydew Police following a shootout on Northumberland Road near Northgate Mall on the evening of 21 February.

Preliminary reports had suggested that only two were killed.

According to Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, the shootout occurred after the suspects were chased by police following a business robbery in the Randburg area.

At about 6.15pm, a business robbery happened at a Fish and Chips restaurant on the corner of Oxford Street and West Avenue in Ferndale. “Three armed suspects entered the shop and demanded cash of R5 500 and cellphones,” said Muthan.

He added that Randburg police were notified and responded to the complaint.

“Upon arrival, the suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a silver BMW with registration number DC 12 WF GP and another car that does not exist with registration number FTC 157 FS,” Muthan explained.

Police gave chase until the suspects reached the Honeydew area next to Northgate Mall where the suspects started to shoot at the police and the police returned fire.

“Three suspects were killed at the scene. The police recovered two firearms – a pistol and an R5 rifle,” Muthan said.
