No plans to relocate Pikitup garden site

The residents of Pranticole Avenue in Allen’s Nek raised a number of concerns pertaining to the state, health risks and other activities taking place at the garden site.

The thorn in the side of residents of Pranticole Avenue in Allen’s Nek is to remain.

This is the news Ward 97 councillor and MMC for Economic Development, Leah Knott had in response to residents’ concerns pertaining to the state of, health risks associated with and other undesirable activities at the Panorama Pikitup garden site. They demanded that the operations be relocated elsewhere.

“The Panorama garden refuse site was established in the early 1990’s and is currently undergoing renovations to address these issues as well as the demand that has arisen due to an increase in residential units constructed over the years,” she said.

Responding to the call to remove the site, Knott said, “The complexes immediately surrounding this site were established after the site was already in place”. So, instead of removing it, upgrades and renovations are being implemented.

Knott explained further, “The Panorama composting plant is currently being used in the interim while these renovations are ongoing. Funds have already been committed to this project and work is ongoing. In terms of the findings of an audit undertaken prior to the upgrades it would constitute irregular and wasteful expenditure to cancel the work being done at this stage.”

The Roodepoort Depot regional manager Stella Wilson said, “Interim arrangements have been made for residents to use the Panorama composting facility during the estimated period of four months while renovations to the Panorama garden site are being done. The Panorama composting facility site will be open to residents as from 2 February 2018 at 12pm.”

She said this facility will accept garden waste, recyclables and small quantities of mixed garden waste.

The facility will not accept building rubble, large tree stumps, domestic waste and furniture.

Wilson reminded residents requiring the removal of bulky waste such as furniture and large appliances to use of the free bulky-waste removal service. This service does not include the removal of building rubble or garden waste. “This is rendered once a month and residents should log a call on 011 375 5555 to request the service,” Wilson explained.

The Panorama composting plant is situated on the Phil Allen Street just off Jim Fouche in Panorama. Phil Allen Street runs parallel to the Panorama garden site.
