Celebrating love through poetry

Promoting arts and culture through poetry

“Thank you for joining us on this day of love … let’s paint the library red!” said an excited Sello Huma.

“The aim of today’s poetry event is to afford young artists within our community an opportunity to exhibit their works. We want to create a space where creative people can come together and comfortably share their talents,” he said. The event took place at the Witpoortjie Library.

The event, held in an open microphone style, was organised by Sello and his good friend, George Links. Sello explained, “We met at the library, and became good friends. We started talking, and realised that there is a need to promote the business of arts and culture, and in order for it to grow, the community needs to be made aware of the local talent in its midst.

“Although the first meeting was attended by a smallish crowd, it did not diminish any of the performing poets’ passion, and they delivered their poems with exuberance. The first participant, Cleford Huma (who is Sello’s older brother) opened the floor with a soulful rendition of a poem titled Look my way, whereafter the rest of the performers were called upon to participate.

Sello, who wrote his own book of poetry, used the opportunity to recite some of his published poems. “Although I want to use the opportunity to promote my book as well, I also recited some of my unpublished poems. After all, this event was meant to inspire and motivate other young poets to also come forward,” he said.

The day’s activities concluded with some nice snacks and refreshments, and Sello thanked the library for allowing them the use of the facilities. “This was only the first event of this kind, and we are planning on having many more, on a regular basis,” he said.
