World Nutella Day

Celebrate the day when hazelnuts and chocolate collided on #WorldNutellaDay

5 February is World Nutella Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of the moment when hazelnuts and chocolate collided, and made interesting things happen.

In the 1800s, a paste of chocolate and hazelnuts was made in the northern Italian city of Piedmont when hazelnuts were abundant and cocoa was not. It is often said that necessity is the mother of invention, and adding hazelnuts when cocoa was hard to come by, may have been an Italian trick during hard times.

During World War II, it was once again difficult to get a hold of cocoa and pastry maker, Pietro Ferrero, made sweet loaves of this sweet paste and named i them Giandujot.

In 1946 the Ferrero Company was founded but it was only in 1951 that the company started making the paste in a spreadable form. In 1964, Ferrero’s son – Michele – gave the jar of creamy hazelnut and cocoa the name Nutella.

World Nutella Day was founded by Sara Rosso in 2007 as a celebration, as well as a way to introduce her favourite spread to her friends. She discovered Nutella for the first time while living in Italy as a food blogger.

To celebrate World Nutella Day is easy – just enjoy some delicious Nutella! Have look online for some recipes to make Nutella mocha latte, Nutella banana bread, Nutella breadpudding and so much more.
