Trolley pushers not illegal, says Minaar

Following a read writing to the Northsider about an incident involving a 'trolley pusher', Chief Superintendent Wayne Minaar says they are indeed allowed to walk in the roads.

A concerned reader recently wrote to the Northsider about an incident they recently experienced.

According to Barry Pieters, he was nearly in an accident due to a trolley pusher.

“I was going up through the pass toward Ontdekkers Road when I came around the corner to find one of these people in the middle of my lane,” he wrote.

“I then slammed on brakes and tried to swerve but was blocked as a car was passing me on my right. Luckily the speed limit was 60km/h and a serious accident could be avoided in this case.”

Upon contact, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Superintendent Wayne Minaar did assert the Northsider that these individuals are not breaking any laws.

“They don’t need a license to operate the trolley, and does not need a registered license to be used,” Minaar stated.

He also expressed that they do a great job for the environment, and that’s why they do not deem them an issue.

“They contribute immensely to the recycling, and that’s why we allow them to carry on.”
