Education department reduces placement backlog

The Gauteng Department of Education plans to place all unadmitted learners before the end of February.

The end of February has been declared as the cut-off date by the Gauteng Department of Education to ensure that every unplaced Grade 1 and 8 child is located in a school.

The statement follows an announcement by the Department regarding its progress in ensuring the placement of children in the province.

In a press release, Steve Mabona, the Department’s spokesperson, indicated that the number of unplaced learners has been reduced to 3 366.

“The Gauteng Department of Education can now report that the number of unplaced learners has drastically been reduced to 3 366. This brings the number of all placed learners to 318 544 learners, of which 176 702 are Grade 1s and 141 842 are Grade 8s,” he stated.

Mabona revealed that the build-up to the backlog was caused by relocations from different walks of life.

“The Department received 395 relocations from other province and countries. These include learners relocating from Zimbabwe, Burundi and India.

The highest number of relocations is from the Free State at 61, followed by Kwa-Zulu Natal with 56 applications and Limpopo with 51,” Mabona explained.

Mabona thanked the parents for their cooperation and also advised them to accept offers of placement even though they may not be their first choice as many schools have reached full capacity.

The Department concluded with the announcement of the closure of the Admission Centres at districts from 31 January.
