UPDATE: Baboon still out-and-about

The lone male baboon is still out-and-about and is currently in the Constantia Kloof area.

The lone male baboon who apparently was kicked out of his troop was first spotted on Monday, at Cradlestone Mall. He has since made his way through the northern parts of Roodepoort in search of a new troop.

Cradlestone Mall management contacted the Northsider wishing to rectify the statement that security chased the baboon off the roof.
According to Cradlestone’s Marketing Mnager, Najla Swiegers, it was contractors on the roof and not security.

“It was the security that called CLAW, but it was the contractors who scared the baboon off the roof,” she said.

Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw), along with members from the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) spent the whole of Thursday tracking him throughout Roodepoort.

He was first spotted yesterday at 9am near Makro in Strubens Valley, and then made his way to the Constantia Kloof area rather quickly. He then spent the rest of his day in the Constantia area.

Claw came agonisingly close to catching him a number of times, with a number of traps being set up in the area. However, he managed to slip away yesterday afternoon and was last seen in the David Street area.

He was spotted again this morning at about 6am in Bristow Street and has since continued to evade capture.

Members of Claw and the Honeydew CPF are hot on his trail again this morning.

If you do spot him, please refrain from taking any action – he is not dangerous and will not harm you if you stay out of his way.

In the case of a sighting, please contact Cora Bailey from Claw on 076 850 4466.
