Sewerage issue affecting business in Ruimsig

The sewerage issue in Ruimsig is not only a problem to residents, but to businesses as well.

Last week, Northsider reported on a sewerage problem that has developed over the last year in Ruimsig.

Following resident Wynand Gericke’s complaint to the Northsider, we attempted to see if the problem was affecting anybody else.

And indeed, it is.

Ramkiki, a restaurant and function venue in Ruimsig, is one business past which the river into which the sewage leaks flows.

This, according to Ramkiki’s Events Coordinator, Ana Gouveia, does not do business any good.

“It does affect business. People have actually come and viewed the venue for a function and said ‘I hope it doesn’t smell like this for the function’,” she said.

She did however state that the situation has improved somewhat over time.

“The situation has gotten better. They’ve just taken so long to get to the bottom of it,” she said.

Following numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact Joburg Water, Northsider did eventually hear more than just voicemail, but we are still awaiting comment.
