National Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day

Set yourself free from your New Year's Resolutions on #NationalDitchNewYear'sResolutionsDay

17 January is National Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day, the perfect opportunity to set yourself free from your first mistakes of the New Year.

New Year’s resolutions are a great opportunity to really set ourselves up for some magnificent disappointments and failures, and that is where this day comes in. It is the perfect time to realise that your New Year’s resolutions were unreasonable and unrealistic, and that the time has come to ditch them, rejoice in your new-found freedom from those torturous diets and horrible exercise regimes, light another cigarette and have that extra glass of wine.

The history of National Ditch Your New Year’s Resolutions Day is as old as New Year’s resolutions themselves. In the intoxicated, hopeful light of the dawn of the New Year, we all believe that the coming year will be different. We believe that we won’t go back to our old habits and we will not allow things to continue as they are. It is such a shame that, year after year, New Year’s resolutions are shown to be about as effective as an umbrella with holes in it.

So, don’t keep yourself tied to these resolutions any longer. Realise you have to make real strides – all year long – to ensure real change happens. Start looking at lifestyle changes and little by little you can make whole life resolutions, and leave the bitter disappointment of not changing a lifetime of bad habits in one week.

How to celebrate today is pretty obvious. Like the name suggests – ditch those New Year’s resolutions like a bad habit. They are not really going to see you through the year anyway! Instead, the best way to celebrate, is by re-evaluating your life as a whole to find real and meaningful reasons to change. Not just because it is a New Year and you are magically inspired with the will and determination you did not possess the year before.

The most important thing to remember, is that the majority of New Year’s resolutions are just silly, limiting and depressing. Get out there and start living your life and be satisfied with who you are, and, if you are genuinely not satisfied, change it for that reason, not because a new page of the calendar has flipped over!
