CLAW urges residents to stay calm around baboon

The baboon was first spotted on Monday, 15 January, at Cradlestone Mall and has since taken himself on a tour of the area.

A lone male baboon has been making his way around the northern areas of Roodepoort since he was first spotted on Monday, 15 January.

The baboon was first spotted by personnel on the roof of Cradlestone Mall, following which they called Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw).

“Personnel contacted us immediately and we said we would send a team, and that nobody must interact with the baboon,” said Cora Bailey, founder of Claw.

“Unfortunately, security at the mall chased the baboon off the roof, and he has been on the run since.”

Cora assured the newspaper that this is not abnormal behaviour at all, and that it is perfectly natural.

“He has simply been cast out from the troop, and is looking for another troop,” she stated.

The last sighting of the baboon was at about 11am this morning on Cypress Road, heading towards Maragon School.

Cora urged residents to remain calm and to not chase him away if he is spotted.

“He is not a danger to anybody, he is alone and scared of people. If you see him, please take your animals inside, and do not chase him away. Instead, please contact us and we will send a trained team to trap him.”

She also emphasised that he will be properly taken care of once captured.

“We will take him to a registered primate facility, where he can be properly cared for.”

To contact Claw if you see the baboon, you can get hold of Cora on 076 850 4466, preferably via WhatsApp or an SMS.
