FroK’s school programmes an adventure

Kloofendal is the ideal outdoor classroom

The Friends of Kloofendal (FroK) invites schools to take part in their nature programme, especially designed for school learners.

The programme, which is curriculum-based, affords learners from Grade R to 12 the opportunity to learn more about nature while having fun. “Kloofendal Nature Reserve is the ideal outdoor classroom for learners of all grades, offering a functional ecosystem in the heart of Johannesburg,” said Karin Spottiswoode.

She added that a typical morning outing will include the following:

• A two-hour guided walk with a qualified field guide

• Time to explore and discover

• Time to enjoy lunch in beautiful surroundings

• Fun worksheets (age-appropriate) consolidating the outing’s experiences

During the nature adventure walks, learners are encouraged to explore the natural environment, while learning about the different plants, animals, insects, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and much more.

The school programme is presented at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve, Galena Avenue, Kloofendal, which has a variety of facilities. Costs are R50 per learner as part of a guided group of a maximum of 20 learners. Each group should be accompanied by at least one teacher from the school.

Learners and teachers need to bring their own packed lunch and drinks, as there are no shops at the reserve. They should wear sensible clothing, which includes sensible shoes, a hat and sunscreen.
