National Crossword Puzzle Day

Celebrate #NationalCrosswordPuzzleDay by doing a few crosswords

21 December is National Crossword Puzzle Day and celebrates the birth of this popular – and often challenging – word game.

The first crossword puzzles were simple word games derived from word squares where letters were arranged in a square so the words read the same across and down. These were published in children’s books and other publications in England.

The inventor of the word game as we know it today is journalist Arthur Wynne from Liverpool. He created what is considered to be the first known published crossword puzzle which appeared in the New York World newspaper on 21 December 1913.

The object of a crossword puzzle is to fill in the white spaces of the grid with the correct words from the clues provided. Some crossword puzzles are more difficult, and to make the game more challenging, these clues are often in the form of riddles.

Crossword puzzles have a lot of benefits – they are not only fun, but challenging puzzles can delay the effects of dementia or sharpen the brain’s problem-solving ability. By completing crossword puzzles, you can increase your vocabulary and you can even relieve the mind from the stress of the day by focusing on something other than worldly problems.

Celebrate today by buying a book filled with challenging crossword puzzles or find a few puzzles online to complete.
