“Kidnapped” boy dies after jumping off bakkie

Bakkie was allegedly travelling at 220km/h.

Mystery surrounds an incident on 19 December in which 16-year-old Jason Kruis died after allegedly jumping off a bakkie that was travelling at 220km/h.

In a sound clip that the Record obtained, one of the three boys that were “kidnapped” claims the following: The three boys, including Kruis, who is allegedly a pupil at Hoërskool Florida, were walking in the Discovery area when a bakkie with an unknown number of occupants stopped next to them and asked whether they wanted a ride. The boys declined but the occupants insisted. When they once again declined, the driver, who was described by the boy talking in the sound clip as a big muscular man, got out, grabbed them and told them to “get into the f*****g car”.

They then got onto the bakkie under duress. According to the boy, the bakkie was travelling at about 120km/h and skipped every traffic light and stop sign. Eventually, the vehicle entered the N1 highway heading towards Pretoria, where, according to the boy, the driver accelerated to about 220km/h, presumably thinking that the boys would not be able to escape by jumping off. The driver then lost control of the bakkie and drove into a ditch, at which point Kruis apparently decided to jump. When the bakkie came to a standstill, his friends ran to him but found him unconscious and bleeding.

It is believed the alleged kidnappers fled.

The boys then allegedly waited for emergency services who treated Kruis on scene. However, Kruis died yesterday morning in Sunninghill Hospital.

In a press statement, ER24 had the following to say. “A 16-year-old boy was left critically injured early this morning when he allegedly jumped off the back of a moving bakkie while driving along the N1 highway near the Malibongwe Road turnoff in Randburg.

ER24 paramedics, along with the Provincial Services, arrived on the scene at approximately 1am to find the boy lying on the side of the road next to the barrier. Two other boys were found nearby.

Paramedics assessed the boy and found that he had sustained numerous injuries and was in a critical condition. They immediately treated the boy and provided him with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the boy was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

It is believed that the boy had jumped off the back of a moving bakkie, which was no longer on the scene. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations”.
