Movies and carols under the stars

It was a night filled with carols, popcorn and a movie under the stars

The Lions Club of Wilro Park ended the year with their annual Christmas Carols and switching on of their Christmas tree lights.

Community members, as well members from the various Lions Clubs, were treated to the witty sayings of Max Kaan (who was the MC for the evening), and performances of well-known carols by Thami Paliso (the president of the Soweto Host Lions Club) and her daughter Khanya. The evening was ended off with a Christmas movie, which was enjoyed under the stars.

Sandy van Heerden, the Public Relations Officer at the Wilro Park Lions Club, explained that this event was not a fundraiser or a service project, but just something fun for the whole family to enjoy. “We do this annually in memory of all lost Lions members. The event is also free, we only ask each person to bring a Christmas treat, which we hand out to the residents at Klein Helderkruin,” she said.

She added that the lights on the Christmas tree will be switched on every night until Christmas Day and said, “We have placed the tree at the front of the club house on Belladonna Street, in order for it to be visible to the community. This is because we would like to share the Christmas spirit, and allow everyone to also experience some Christmas joy.”

The reason for the annual event is to celebrate the lives of past club presidents, Tommy and Molly Francis. “The lights on the Christmas tree are in memory of my mother, Molly. She fell on her birthday (9 December) and passed away on Christmas Day. This serves to help us to, instead of being sad, celebrate her life, as well as that of my father, Tommy, and to remember all the good things they taught us,” said Sandy.

Sandy concluded with the following message to the community, “From all of us at the Wilro Park Lions, we sincerely wish all the community a very peaceful and happy Christmas. Remember that life is short, each day should be celebrated.”
