10 Tips to stay safe during the holidays

‘Be a responsible citizen and stay alert’

The festive season is upon us, and for many residents this is the perfect time to let down their guard and relax.

But, this is the time you need to be more vigilant than ever, to avoid being a victim of crime.

The Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Sergeant Juliet Mogale, is urging residents to follow these steps to ensure they have a safe and joyful holiday break:

• When getting out of your vehicle, do not use your remote to lock the doors. Ensure you use the door handle to check if the doors are actually locked, as there are a lot of active car jammers on the prowl.

• When you have drawn cash at the ATM, or just finished your shopping, avoid putting your money in your wallet or car, in full view of the public.

• Do not drive with your laptop or handbag inside the vehicle, where it is visible. Rather lock it away in the boot.

• Do not use or send text messages on your cellphone while driving – you can cause an accident with far-reaching consequences.

• Do not pick up any strangers at the side of the road and give them a ride.

• When using an ATM, you should be alert and conscious of your surroundings at all times.

• If you are a member of a stokvel, you should never go to the bank to withdraw large amounts of cash – arrange with the bank to rather deposit the money into the various accounts.

• Ensure your gates are locked at all times, and windows closed.

• Maintain a good relationship with your neighbours – this will ensure you are in a good position to support and help each other.

• Don’t drink and drive – you are not only endangering your own life, but those of others as well.
