Safety tips to stop ATM cons

While in bank or ATM queues, take note of the people around you for future identification purposes.

 

As most business will be paying their employees their much-earned 13th cheques or bonuses before Christmas, Honeydew Police Station has issued some safety tips to help prevent the loss or theft of monies at ATMs.

Although visible policing is being maintained throughout the policing precinct this festive season, police have warned that perpetrators will still be out in full force targeting consumers at shopping centres.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, provided the following tips for people withdrawing or carrying large sums of money:

· Don’t withdraw huge amounts of money.

· Always be in the company of someone when withdrawing or conveyance of money.

· Always be alert.

· Check for cars and people following you from the bank.

· If you think you’re being followed, change route or direction.

· If you notice suspicious people or a car following you, call the police for assistance.

· Be in possession of police contact numbers.

· While in bank or ATM queues, take note of the people around you for future identification purposes.

· Stokvels and clubs should avoid sharing money in a public and unsecured environment.

· Stokvels and clubs should rather request banks to deposit the money into their bank accounts.

· Don’t allow a stranger to offer to help you at an ATM.

· Don’t give your bank card PIN number to anyone.

· Always cover or protect your bank card PIN number.

· Don’t accept lifts from strangers or people who may be impersonating police officers.
