Roadblock dates: Here’s what’s really happening

Culprit will be jailed for no longer than 48 hours.

If you consider drinking and driving now that you know the roadblock dates, think again.

A dangerous WhatsApp message has been doing the rounds claiming the following: “Roadblock dates are December 16, 23 and 30 as well as all Fridays until Saturday mornings. No mercy. One beer is over the limit. Will be jailed till hearing on Mondays. Car will be impounded. If arrested a minimum of R2 000 will be charged to retrieve car. If car is in road-worthy condition, there are no outstanding fines and if licence is up to date. Pass the word.”

But according to Metro Police, “Someone’s got it wrong”. In response to the WhatsApp message they released a statement saying, “Community Safety and Metro Police will be intensifying our drunk-driving and crime-prevention campaigns during this festive period – jointly as well as individually. Certainly more than once a week and not only on a Friday night.

“The police station determines the bail amount. If an offender cannot pay bail then he/ she will stay in a cell until their first court appearance, but not longer than 48 hours unless there is a weekend or public holiday in between.

“Cars will be handed over to police or to a licensed, sober and responsible person nominated by the driver – failing which, the vehicle will come to our office for safekeeping. The offender will then collect the vehicle at our office without any impounded fee charges and we won’t check the outstanding fines either.

“Bottom line – don’t drink and drive.”
