Five movies perfect for a rainy day
Looking for something to do inside while the rain keeps pouring down? Here are five movies you can stay in bed all day and watch.
1. Mrs Doubtfire (1993)
The late Robin Williams stars in this movie as a man who disguises himself as a woman after suffering a rather bitter divorce.
The plan behind this is to simply make sure he can spend time with his children, since his ex-wife claimed custody after their divorce.
What ensues is a cry till you laugh and laugh till you cry classic, that is perfect for rainy weather.
2. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) faces the threat of losing his job as a photo developer at Life Magazine in this comedic adventure drama.
He then embarks on a journey to track down a man for a photo that could possibly save his job.
What follows is a journey that will change him, and the viewer, forever.
The movie often switches between reality and Walter Mitty’s imagination, playing with the mind of the viewer in the process.
This creates a soft sense of psychological trickery throughout the movie which will have you continuously going back to watch it again.
3. Me Before You (2016)
Emilia Clarke plays a down-and-out woman by the name of Lou Clark who just can’t seem to find the right job.
She is then employed by a family to take care of a stubborn paraplegic man (Sam Claflin as Will Traynor) who’s bound to a wheelchair after an accident when he was younger.
Unbeknown to Lou, Will plans to travel to Switzerland where euthanasia is legal, as he cannot live like a grown child anymore.
The two develop a strong bond, eventually falling in love with each other.
Eventually Lou becomes aware of Will’s plans, and she tries to talk him out of it, but to no avail.
With witty remarks and sudden touching moments, this is definitely a movie that will see you chuckling while reaching for the tissue box.
4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (1992)
This beautiful romantic comedy is one of the best feel-good movies around.
A woman whose family’s belief in their cultural roots is strong, faces the challenge of convincing them to accept a non-Greek man whom she’s planning to marry. As the family struggles to accept this ‘outsider’, the viewer is treated to a stark realisation of the difference between western culture and traditional Greek culture.
5. Father of the Bride (1991)
One can just about never go wrong with a Steve Martin movie (*cough* Pink Panther *cough*), and this is yet another perfect example thereof.
He stars as a father whose daughter is set to be married soon, and just can’t let go of her. As any father does, he struggles to realise that his ‘little girl’ just isn’t so little anymore, and that it’s time for her to move on and continue with her life.
This is yet another example of a cry till you laugh and laugh till you cry classic, with Steve Martin playing the role perfectly.
