New dads to get paternity leave soon

Leave will be paid by UIF.

A landmark Bill was passed in Parliament yesterday.

It is the first private member’s Bill to pass in Parliament and seeks paternity leave for fathers. The Labour Laws Amendment Bill was proposed by the African Christian Democratic Party’s (ACDP) MP, Cheryllyn Dudley.

Previously, fathers qualified for three days’ family responsibility leave which was paid for by the employer but under the new Bill fathers will qualify for 10 days’ paternity leave which will be paid for by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

“The Bill seeks to provide for parental leave, adoption leave and commissioning parental leave. It also provides for the payment of parental benefits as well as commissioning parental benefits from the UIF,” the ACDP said in a statement.

“The ACDP values family and the important role it plays in society and we are grateful for this opportunity to inspire legislative reform which we believe will positively impact on the lives of children in South Africa,” said ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe.

“In a country where fathers have historically been separated from their families and survival necessitated an acceptance of not being able to bond and be hands-on in their day-to-day upbringing , initiatives that facilitate the involvement of fathers in their children’s lives are welcomed and encouraged by the ACDP,” said Moshoe.

Under the new Bill, adopting parents will get 10 weeks’ leave.
