Bruce Webster, an Apcan Security manager, shared his version of events, saying, “A patroller (Juan) from Debonair Street, Helderkruin spotted the Fortuner in Helderkruin. He followed it to Topaz Street where it stopped at the Kammaland Nursery School where the occupants tried to steal a car. I got a phone call from Juan about the Fortuner and responded to Kammaland where I saw the vehicle and boxed it in.”

“The Fortuner then turned hard right, went up a pavement and collided with a tree, then proceeded onto Wilgerood Road heading towards Christiaan De Wet Road, with me in pursuit.

The Fortuner got stuck in traffic, but when I tried to force the occupants out of the vehicle, they drove up onto the median and into the oncoming traffic. I made my way through the traffic jam as other motorists showed me that the Fortuner had turned into Matrys Avenue, Kloofendal, and proceeded to check for the vehicle.

The Fortuner then went back onto Christian De Wet Road, crossed Ontdekkers Road and collided with a Mercedes Benz at the traffic lights leading into the Florida Junction centre. By this time, numerous security companies, Help24, and the Police were in hot pursuit. The Fortuner then turned into Phoebe Crescent and stopped. The occupants then hijacked a blue Nissan 1400 bakkie and made a getaway. Apcan response vehicles later found the Nissan 1400 in Sage Street, Florida Park,” he explained.

It is alleged that the driver of the Nissan 1400 was apprehended because he was a wanted suspect. Webster said further that the two suspects had fled on foot. He is convinced they took a taxi and left the area.

Webster has thanked all the security companies and patrollers who were involved in the pursuit of the Fortuner.
