Shortly before 2pm today (23 November) a 20-year-old mother and her one-month-old baby were assaulted on Generaal Pienaar Avenue in Witpoortjie.
The mother, Bonolo Mongale, was pushing the baby in its pram when she noticed six boys, three on each side of the road, acting suspiciously. Near the Michael Brink intersection they pounced. They tried to grab her cellphone but she fought back. The boys assaulted her and in the process the baby fell out of its pram. A resident saw what happened and alerted Apcan Security staff who, along with members of the public, managed to apprehend at least one of the six boys – a 14-year-old.

Roodepoort Police were called to the scene to arrest the young suspect.
A private ambulance service was also called to the scene to assess the baby.
