Domestic workers fearful of bystanders in Strubens Valley

The matter has reached the point where the domestic workers have appealed to a local security company to intervene by warning the bystanders.

Domestic workers and other female employees working in Strubens Valley have raised concerns about the abuse they endure on a daily basis while making their way to work.

These workers vented their anger about bystanders who try to take advantage of them, which has made them afraid to walk to the bus stop after work.

The matter has reached the point where the domestic workers appealed to a local security company to intervene by warning the bystanders.

Gary Jordaan from BCI Security confirmed that on 14 November they were approached by four distressed domestic workers, one in tears, complaining about the abuse.

“The domestic workers asked for assistance with the group of men who sit on the corner of Fredenharry and Cascades Roads. They alleged that the group of men sexually harasses and verbally abuses them every morning on their way to work,” Jordaan indicated.

BCI personnel were dispatched to warn the bystanders.

“Our TRT and K9 officers then went to talk to the men and requested that they leave the area if they have no business being there,” Jordaan explained.

Miriam Seleke, the founder of Let’s Be Wise, a domestic workers’ forum in the Little Falls and Strubens Valley area, confirmed to the Northsider that the problem exists and they required intervention from local authorities.

“We have a problem of abusive men, especially those who hang around the Engen garage, drinking alcohol. They harass us every day and we’re afraid to walk to Spar or Clearwater Mall,” Seleke explained, adding that the issue will force them to lay a charge against these men if they continue with their inappropriate behaviour.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, has on many occasions urged residents to report such matters to the police.

Jordaan concluded by saying, “We take allegations like this very seriously – we are here to protect our entire community and will not allow such disgusting behaviour towards residents or employees in our area”.
