Huge breakthrough with arrest of shopping-centre break-in gang

Security guard heard glass breaking.

In the early hours of Saturday (18 November) a security guard at Wilrokrans Shopping Centre alerted the DMS Security control room after he had heard the sound of glass breaking.

An officer responded and found that the window of the pizza restaurant next to Spar had been broken and the burglar bars pried open. He called for backup and the company’s K9 Unit arrived. They went into the restaurant and found one suspect, whom they arrested.

The police and Flying Squad were called to the scene. After interrogating the suspect they realised that there were at least another two suspects in the vicinity.

BCI Security also arrived and the two suspects were found in the roof of Spar. The area was searched and grinders with several grinding disks, crowbars and explosives used in ATM bombings were discovered. The suspects are believed to be part of the syndicate that has been targeting shopping centres and shops. Money and cigarettes were also recovered.

The suspects were detained at Roodepoort Police Station.
